Blithe Spirit
Blithe Spirit
Performed at the University of North Carolina Wilmington 2025
Written in 1941, Blithe Spirit remained the longest-running comedy in British Theatre for three decades. Blithe Spirit is a tug-of-love comedy with a difference: one of the lovers is a ghost. Novelist Charles, hoping to gather material for his next book, asks Madame Arcati (one of the great characters in all of theatre) to conduct a séance in his house. It works too well: his first wife returns from the other side, with predictably disastrous results for his second marriage.

“Two households both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life.” Ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents, two young people will risk everything to be together. The most famous story of love at first sight explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change. Will this spark a revolution or will division continue to tear through generations?

This rendition of Romeo and Juliet takes on a punk rock aesthetic with music driven elements.
